This is nothing short of a nightmare for Tiger Brands. Their canned vegetable products, manufactured by KOO or Hugo’s, are set to be recalled due to a technical issue that may have spoiled some goods. An estimated 20 million tins are allegedly affected, creating a PR migraine for the food industry titans.

PRODUCT RECALL FOR TIGER BRANDS AND KOO TINNED VEGETABLES: WHAT PRODUCTS NEED TO BE RETURNED?

The problem? Well, they believe ‘an extremely small number of defective cans’ have found their way into a main manufacturing batch. The cans in question may have a defective side seam weld that could cause the can to leak, creating possible health concerns for anyone who consumed the goods. A total of 26 items are now in jeopardy.

  • – Customers must check their cans to see if they were manufactured between 1 May 2019 – 5 May 2021.
  • – If it falls within the two-year window, you can return the cans to the store of purchase for a full refund.

HOW TO CHECK IF YOUR TINNED VEGETABLES ARE A HEALTH RISK

Tiger Brands issued a statement via the KOO website, playing down the associated health fears with the product recall. They say the decision is based purely on their food safety standards, and they are acting in a ‘precautionary manner’.

“No health issues have been reported to date relating to the affected product range. Although there is a low probability of illness and injury, matters of quality and food safety are an absolute priority for Tiger Brands. The company, in consultation with the NCC, therefore made the decision to initiate a precautionary withdrawal in the best interest of consumers.”

“Canned vegetable products forming part of the recall can be identified by looking at the manufacturing date code stamped on the bottom or top of the can. The manufacturing date appears in the first line following the letters MAN. The product recall also involves tins of baked beans, manufactured by KOO and Hugo’s.”
