Microsoft has refreshed the logo and icon designs of many of its apps.

Over 100 of the company’s app icons have been modified in terms of colours, materials, and finishes.

The redesign follows Microsoft launching new logos for its Office Suite last year, and an update to the Microsoft Edge browser logo in November.

These changes form part of Microsoft’s Fluent Design principles, which endeavours to modernise Windows apps, while also creating more coherency across the range.

Microsoft said its designers are collaborating internally in an “open source” way to address the operating system’s outdated logos.

The new designs now appear to be more consistent when observed as a whole.

Windows 10X

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced it was working on an operating system for dual-screen devices, called Windows 10X.

Along with the announcement, the company revealed a new Windows logo, that uses different gradients of blue for its four tiles, instead of the existing version’s single light-blue colour.

Windows 10X does away with Live Tiles and includes an updated Start menu, while Microsoft is also working on adding easier access to settings and notifications.
